One of the rarest heritage breeds of hogs, the Black Hog is listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory as endangered with fewer than 300 breeding hogs registered today. Compared to other breeds, the flavors of the Black Hog’s meat is exceptional. The lean micro-marbled meat is extra tender due to the breed’s short muscle fibers. This produces a tender, moist cut of pork with an exquisite and unique taste. We thought it was only fitting to choose this name to represent the fine quality of food and service that we offer at the restaurant.

Frederick County’s original brewpub. Brewer’s Alley is proud to continue the long history of beer making in a town known for its deep appreciation of fine fermented spirits. The name itself is taken from a page of history. Brewer’s Alley was located on what is currently South Court Street. Beer Production ceased in 1901 when a large fire consumed the brewery of John Kuhn, who was the last in a long line of brewers to occupy space along the banks of Carroll Creek. For over 153 years, from the very beginning of Frederick County, Brewer’s Alley was a fixture in the social and economic landscape of Frederick. Ninety-five years after leaving Frederick, Brewer’s Alley is back! We invite you to visit and enjoy the house beers at our distinctive bar or rooftop deck, as well as some of the Finest Culinary Creations in one of our beautiful dining rooms. In the heart of Downtown Frederick, Brewer’s Alley has become a favorite destination for local residents and worldwide travelers alike.

Since opening in September 2013, Curious Iguana has quickly become a popular literary hub for locals and tourists alike. Our globally diverse collection and vibrant events calendar reflect the Iguana’s mission of “Get To Know Your World.” Our welcoming and knowledgeable team of booksellers makes browsing at the Iguana a unique and pleasant experience. In addition to being a bookstore and a community gathering space, the Iguana is a benefit corporation. Each month, we donate a portion of the store’s sales to international non-profits (more than $43,300 as of June 2017). The pins in the map behind our counter show the countries where our customers’ purchases have helped make a world of difference. We also have a big heart for the Frederick community, offering as much support as we can to local schools, non-profits, and other organizations. We started Elegant Forever over 10 years ago based on the belief that there should be something in between fancy, over-priced shops and discount bridal outlets. There should be a place where brides aren’t pressured on time and limited on the number of wedding dresses they can try on. And being practical about your budget shouldn’t mean you can’t find a wedding dress that makes you look beautiful. Most importantly, a place where personalized service takes a front seat to the rushed and snooty service found at many bridal boutiques or bridal shops. We believe shopping for your wedding dress is the most important purchase of your life. And we feel fortunate to be part of your journey. We are a small, personalized bridal shop and we’re confident we can help you find the perfect dress!

Everedy Square & Shab Row is Downtown Frederick’s largest cluster of specialty shops, eateries and services housed in beautifully restored 19th Century buildings in historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland. Restored and preserved, the Everedy Square & Shab Row district offers relaxing shopping experiences in historic buildings spread over three blocks on East Street. The dwellings which comprise shops on Shab Row formerly housed tinkers, wheelwrights and other artisans who serviced the first stagecoaches traveling west on The National Pike (now known as US Route 40). The buildings of Everedy Square were once the home of the Everedy Company, where the Everedy Bottle Capper was invented and manufactured. The product met with national success following the enactment of Prohibition. Prospering for 50 years, The Everedy Company ultimately produced a line of kitchenware that is still used in many households today. The area was purchased and restored by Frederick businessman, Bert Anderson, in the 1970s and 1980s to produce the vital shopping and business district that it is today.

In 1998, Kim Firestone and his partner Kathy Wasley closed Café Delight, a little yogurt and sandwich shop they had been operating for five years in a Frederick, Maryland strip mall. They jumped into a bigger venture. Kim bought a restaurant in downtown Frederick called Donnelly’s and renamed it Firestone’s Culinary Tavern. The new restaurant opened in the spring of 1999 and, bolstered in the kitchen by the appointment of Chef Jack Walker, quickly grew in popularity to become an important part of Frederick’s increasingly dynamic and diverse restaurant scene. Seven years later, when the owner of an adjacent building decided she wanted to retire, Firestone bought the building and transformed it into a specialty food market named Market on Market (it’s on Market Street). Nine years after that, the next building up the street was to become the third member of the team. A little more shuffling was necessary, however. The Market moved into the third building, after a total makeover, and what had been the Market was transformed into an extension of the restaurant named The Raw Bar, featuring oysters and charcuterie in a completely remodeled facility. And that’s where it stands today, a long stretch from Café […]

Long, long ago, in the ancient Mediterranean, someone, some anonymous HERO, decided to smash up some chickpeas and BOOM. The art of eating hummus was born. (or is it birthed? Idk, but if we knew the exact date this happened I would celebrate it.) Hummus has been savored all over the world for thousands of years because of it’s versatile (and delicious) nature. In fact, hummus can fulfill almost all of your body’s nutritional needs and it’s super rich in vitamins + minerals. So after years of keeping the good stuff all to myself, I decided to just make more and share it with you guys, in hopes that it’ll help you live well and feel good. Just trying to keep it kosher with my body, mind and mother nature. Come hang out with me at a farmer’s market this summer so we can chill and eat hummus in the sun like our ancestors did thousands of years ago! Hand-crafted in Frederick, MD. Established 2016

The Hollerstown Hill Bed & Breakfast, established in 2002, is located in a quiet downtown Frederick neighborhood. It is a wonderful example of late victorian architecture built in c.1900 by Sarah and Richard Dutrow, owners in the late 1800s of the Dutrow Confectionary. The bed & breakfast is graced with carved mantels, fireplaces, period antiques, reproductions, and collectibles. For example, Betty displays her large collection of dolls throughout the house. There is a game room in which you’ll find a traditional pool table plus nooks for board games, including a chess set with Civil War characters. The four uniquely decorated guest rooms are spacious, each with sitting area and en suite bath, air conditioning, and cable TV. Begin your day with freshly brewed coffee or tea. Indulge in a full country breakfast featuring home-baked breads, fresh fruit, juices/ smoothies, yogurt, granola, and sumptuous breakfast casseroles. Guests can relax on the wrap-around porch or garden patios, enjoy the game room, or leisurely stroll to the center of downtown Frederick’s charming historic district to visit the shops, museums, local events, and numerous restaurants. There are many additional historic sites a short drive away. Your hosts/proprietors, Betty and Phil LeBlanc look forward to making your visit a memorable one.

We make and carry traditional colonial furnishings and folk art by true American artisans. Primitive Homespuns began over 16 years ago in the spare bedroom of my house. I was a former art major and stay at home mom for two wonderful children looking for a way to get creative. So, I started sewing pillows and table runners. Then dolls and animals. I would handle the sewing and my mom would handle the stuffing. We participated in craft shows and church bazaars, slowly building our business. We were a perfect pairing of art and creativity with great energy and humor.

From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman and chief executive officer) had first walked into a Starbucks store. From his first cup of Sumatra, Howard was drawn into Starbucks and joined a year later. In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and became captivated with Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home. He left Starbucks for a short period of time to start his own Il Giornale coffeehouses and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks […]

From the sidewalk, Stone Hearth Bakery hints at its European flair. During the summer, large pots bloomed profusely out front, amidst quaint sign boards announcing the daily specials. Along the side of the building, facing East Church, bistro tables with large umbrellas, amidst more gorgeous flowers, provided a place to retreat and enjoy a sandwich or sweet. But with summer gone and fall full upon us, the bakery beckons even more with hot, comforting soups, thick, satisfying sandwiches . . . and of course, the lure of fresh-baked breads and desserts.

Back in 1965, Fred DeLuca set out to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Searching for a way to help pay for his education, a family friend suggested he open a submarine sandwich shop. With a loan of $1,000, the friend—Dr. Peter Buck—offered to become Fred’s partner, and a business relationship was forged that would change the landscape of the fast food industry. The first shop was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. Then, they set a goal of having 32 stores opened in 10 years. Fred soon learned the basics of running a business, as well as the importance of serving a well-made, high quality product, providing excellent customer service, keeping operating costs low and finding great locations. These early lessons continue to serve as the foundation for successful SUBWAY restaurants around the world.

Exceptional dining awaits you at VOLT in historic Frederick, Maryland, where Executive Chef Bryan Voltaggio’s seasonal entreés showcase classic flavor combinations prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Quartered within a spectacular 19th Century brownstone mansion, the restaurant’s distinctive ambience combines Victorian elegance with contemporary, urban sophistication. The restaurant’s Main Dining Room, awash in a palette of amber and burnt rose, pays homage to the building’s original Gilded Era construction. The glass enclosed, oval-shaped Conservatory – designated for private dining – yields panoramic views of the mansion’s walled garden. Victorian subtlety gives way to the excitement and intensity of the contemporary Chef’s Dining Room where guests can witness cuisine in creation by Chef Voltaggio and his talented kitchen staff. The lounge offers a premier destination for social exchange or casual dining – its translucent bar, upholstered seating and vintage palladian window overlooking Market Street. Less than 50 miles from Washington, D.C., Leesburg, Annapolis and Baltimore, VOLT is located in the heart of Frederick’s nationally-renowned historic district – an architectural treasure trove of 18th and 19th Century buildings which house hundreds of specialty stores, antique shops, bed and breakfasts and restaurants.

Event is free and open to the public; no reservations required. Q&A and book signing will follow presentation, and books will be available for purchase at event. The Woman’s Hour details the nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in American history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. Nashville, August 1920. Thirty-five states have ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, twelve have rejected or refused to vote, and one last state is needed. It all comes down to Tennessee, the moment of truth for the suffragists, after a seven-decade crusade. The opposing forces include politicians with careers at stake, liquor companies, railroad magnates, and a lot of racists who don’t want black women voting. And then there are the “Antis”–women who oppose their own enfranchisement, fearing suffrage will bring about the moral collapse of the nation. They all converge in a boiling hot summer for a vicious face-off replete with dirty tricks, betrayals and bribes, bigotry, Jack Daniel’s, and the Bible. Following a handful of remarkable women who led […]

In January 2014, Moreno received the Screen Actors Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Her first book, “Rita Moreno: A Memoir,” instantly became a New York Times Bestseller. In 2011, she premiered her one-woman show, “Life Without Make-Up,” an original play about her life and appeared regularly as Fran Drescher’s mother in the TVLand series “Happily Divorced.” She has recently begun production on the Latino remake of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom “One Day at a Time,” for Netflix. This creative diversity has been the hallmark of Moreno’s nearly 70-year career. She belongs to an elite group of only eight living performers who have won entertainment’s grand slam of the industry’s most prestigious awards: an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony, and a Grammy. Her Oscar win came in 1962 as spitfire Anita in the film version of “West Side Story,” for which she also won a Golden Globe. Her Tony win was for her 1975 comedic triumph as Googie Gomez in Broadway’s “The Ritz.” Moreno was awarded a Grammy for her 1972 performance on “The Electric Company Album,” based on the long-running […]

Decades later each woman covets the other’s life, commencing a dangerously game of musical chairs. Every Friday and Saturday at 8PM. Other performance times available.
