Volunteer Opportunities
Lend a helping hand in Downtown Frederick! We’ve got many ways for you to get involved – from help on site at special events to seats on various committees. There’s something to suit everyone’s interests. Please review the volunteer opportunities listed below and email mainstreet@downtownfrederick.org or call 301-698-8118 if you are interested in volunteering.
Special events
Photographers: We’re always looking for great images of Downtown Frederick during our special events. Please contact us if you would like to capture the fun for us on film – for any of our events. Email mainstreet@downtownfrederick.org or call 301-698-8118.
Musicians: We need musical guests for most of our events. If you would like to be considered for a First Saturday, Frosty Friday or another event, please email mainstreet@downtownfrederick.org or call 301-698-8118. With several thousand people attending each event, you’ll have great exposure to the downtown crowd. We’ll also publicize your band in our event promotional materials.
First Saturday – On any given First Saturday throughout the year, we need volunteers to take shifts from 5-9PM. First Saturday showcases the work of local, regional and international artists, and features gallery openings, guest artists, live entertainment and special activities from 5-9PM. Extended shopping hours are also available at many of our fine specialty stores. Check out the volunteer opportunities below and let us know which interest you by emailing mainstreet@downtownfrederick.org
Art Tables
Show First Saturday shoppers & diners how to make fun crafts and art projects. In May, we’ll draw pictures and have face-painting. |
Luminaries
Light up the night by setting up our luminaries on the downtown sidewalks! Volunteer to setup luminaries before any of the following First Saturdays (4:30PM): November, December, January & February. We also need help making luminaries a few days before the event for each of these months. |

Hand out free cocoa on the downtown sidewalks – a great way to get into the holiday spirit and meet some of the thousands of First Saturday shoppers & diners. Volunteer for a shift during any of the following First Saturdays: November, December, January & February. |
Old-Fashioned Game Stations
In July, we celebrate our status as a Great American Main Street with nearly 20 old-fashioned game stations throughout downtown. Come man a station and join in the fun! |

Get into character during April's First Saturday Gallery Walk – Much Ado About Books! Volunteer to wear a costume from a classic children’s book and greet shoppers and diners on the downtown sidewalks. |
Pumpkin Painting Tables
In October – Into the Night – volunteer to man a pumpkin painting table on the downtown sidewalks, or help us set up other fun fall activities - hayrides, square dancing and scary stations. |
Dog Costume Contest Registration & Yappy Hour After Party Setup
Help us register costumed canines in August during Dog Days of Summer. You’ll meet hundreds of pooches big and small during this First Saturday.
Help us set up refreshments for Yappy Hour – the after party where we announce the winners of the Dog Days of Summer dog costume contest. It all occurs in August. |
Storytelling
In April (Much Ado About Books), volunteer as a storyteller and read children’s stories in the early hours or tell ghost stories in the later hours. |
Frosty Friday – On the Friday after Thanksgiving, stores and restaurants open for early-bird shoppers and diners, and a spirited day filled with seasonal activities begins. We need volunteer entertainers to make this event festive – singers, dancers, carolers, actors and bands are invited to perform holiday-themed and original material on the downtown sidewalks. With several thousand shoppers/diners on Frosty Friday, you’ll get great exposure to downtown visitors. We also need volunteers to take pictures of our costumed guest, Frosty the Snowman! Please email mainstreet@downtownfrederick.org or call 301-698-8118 if you’re interested.
