Just an hour from D.C., Frederick, MD is surrounded by mountain views, wineries, orchards and the state’s largest brewery. Downtown’s Millennial Migration: Erik Moore
After attending college in Pittsburg and working in financial services there, Frederick native Erik Moore didn’t immediately leap at the chance to return home and join the family business. “Pittsburg’s just bigger, so there was a little hesitation,” says Erik, the Financial Planning Services & Analysis Manager with Moore Wealth, Inc., a concierge wealth management firm with offices in Downtown Frederick. But Erik, who grew up in Spring Ridge, didn’t immediately rule out a homecoming, either. “I’ve never lived in Frederick as an adult and so there was a lot I hadn’t experienced before,” he says. A lot of those experiences are brand new, too. Frederick – especially downtown – isn’t quite the same place he knew as a teen. “There’s a lot of stuff coming to Frederick that’s appealing to people my age,” says Erik, “the new rooftop bar at Brewer’s Alley has been a real hit.” So, after a few trips home to sample the scene, Erik and his fiancé made the move from Pittsburgh to Frederick in November of 2016. And while he grew up in the suburbs, they decided to make downtown their new home. “The office is here, so that made it easy. Plus, for someone my age, the other areas aren’t as […]
Downtown’s Professional Life: Shabri Moore
For Shabri Moore, having her office downtown just makes sense. “Being downtown makes it easy to collaborate with people and easy to build relationships; everyone’s very open to saying we’re part of this community, let’s work together,” she says. The President of Moore Wealth, a concierge wealth management firm, Shabri has had her office in the South Market Center, overlooking Carroll Creek, for the past eight years, “Being right on the creek is great,” she says, “it’s easy to pop out and have lunch or grab a cup of coffee. There’s a really wonderful energy being downtown.” And that vibrancy explains why Shabri is one of a growing number of professionals choosing to both work and live downtown. “I found that I was getting really annoyed that I had to drive home at the end of the day,” says Shabri, who sold her house in Spring Ridge two years ago and moved into a new townhouse in Maxwell Square on E. 5th Street. “I was spending all my time downtown anyway, between work and going out and meeting with friends after work and the thought of walking to work was really appealing,” she says, adding that her morning commute is “eight minutes door to door.” But while her eight-minute commute […]

Kids in the City: Susan and Jeremy Kelley
Like a lot of new parents, the birth of their first child meant it was time for Susan and Jeremy Kelley to trade their small starter home in on a bigger house. But the couple, who’d spent the past decade living in a turn of the century row house across Patrick Street from the fairgrounds and a few doors down from the house Patsy Cline once called home, didn’t head to the suburbs. Instead, they bought a three-story detached townhouse on E. Second Street. “We’d always wanted to be closer into downtown,” says Susan. And the fact that they had a toddler didn’t discourage them. “So many people feel like they need to disengage when they have kids and I felt like we need to engage more,” says Jeremy. Once a boarding house, the home is currently divided into three units. The largest apartment, which meanders over all three levels, is home to the couple and their two children – Jack and his little sister Jane, who was born after the move. “What I like about this house is that it’s a house we can grow into,” says Jeremy. But in the meantime, the home’s other two units house rental tenants and provide a welcome income […]

I graduated from Urbana High School, where I spent all of my free time on the stage. How did you jump from being a youth minister, to running Surelocked In Escape Games? Of the events I hosted at the Church, I noticed that puzzle or scavenger hunt games had the highest turnout. I had been planning to open an escape room for years, so we listened to the community and did just that! So who is the mastermind behind Surelocked In Escape Games? Did you bring in a consultant? Everything at Surelocked In is made in-house! […]

Dino Alley in Downtown Frederick
When we announced a call for artists to paint a mural in Downtown Frederick and Goodloe Byron suggested a 3-story dinosaur… we said, “When can you get started?!” Born out of an initiative to connect some of downtown’s underutilized pedestrian spaces, Dino Alley is now a must-see tourist attraction in the heart of Downtown Frederick. Standing more than 30-feet-tall, it’s a little hard to miss the astrodon johnstoni (Maryland’s state dinosaur… for any of you wondering) who’s now proudly standing on the side of the Church Street Public Parking Garage. In addition to the colorful mural that stretches from end to end of the garage’s western face, the Partnership also contracted the team at Rick Jones Electric to brighten up the pedestrian alleyway with overhead string lights, which come on every evening to make the popular walkway a more welcoming cut-through in downtown’s busy nightlife district. Without question, Dino Alley is a favorite photo opp for tourists, a hidden gem for locals and the most perfect backdrop to a roof-top happy hour at Brewer’s Alley. Stomp through and see for yourself! Downtown Frederick Partnership’s Dino Alley project was made possible by support from Brewer’s Alley, the City of Frederick‘s Parking Department and […]

Addressing Fire Risks in Downtown Frederick
In January 2019, Downtown Frederick Partnership announced two new grant programs to address the risk of fire in historic buildings – the Downtown Frederick Fire Suppression Incentive Program and the Attic Fire Separation Program. As an outgrowth of the Partnership’s 2020 Strategic Plan and the Live Downtown Frederick goal of welcoming 335 new residents to Downtown Frederick by 2020, these programs are some of the first of their kind to address the known risk of fire damage in historic downtown environments. * 2020 Update: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, untapped funds from the Attic Fire Separation Program were transitioned to support increased demand for the Partnership’s Mission: Interior grant program, funding interior building improvements for downtown businesses. Learn more about the 2020 Mission: Interior awards here. The Downtown Frederick Fire Suppression Incentive Program addresses the high costs of installing sprinklers in smaller commercial/multi-family/mixed use buildings. These smaller buildings are disproportionately impacted by the cost of sprinkler installation, which may make it financially infeasible. Since properly sprinklered buildings increase personal safety and protect our historic and cultural heritage, the Partnership seeks to lessen this financial burden and increase the number of fire-protected buildings in Downtown Frederick. • This grant program is for […]

Creating Rainworks in Downtown Frederick
Rainy days are no fun… so we decided to create our own sunshine in Downtown Frederick! With a little elbow grease and the right supplies, anyone can create a Rainwork in just three easy steps. Find the Location: Look for cement that has an even surface, is light in color and doesn’t have much (or any) gravel visible.Get the Materials: We made all of our stencils by hand using cardboard, string and hot glue. We also used the official Rainworks Invisible Spray to create the best finished product.Install: Wait for a sunny day with low wind and go to work! We definitely recommend using a very fine mist to prevent bleeding around the edges of your stencil. Some tips we learned… Use big, bold graphics and lettering so that the fine details don’t get lost. Consider pressure washing your sidewalk first if it’s seen better days. It took a little more paint than we were expecting, so be prepared to have a second installation day in case you need to get more. Once your Rainwork is complete, all that’s left to do is wait! The designs are truly invisible when dry, so people will have no idea your secret art […]

Historic Charm and Modern Convenience in Downtown Frederick
In August 2017, a fire tore through the seven apartment units that occupied 126 S Market St, leaving the building uninhabitable and with hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. After a painstaking rehabilitation by new owners Ingrid Smith and Gerardo Lapetina, the building is set to welcome new occupants as early as January 1, 2020. Now home to five completely new, luxury 1-bedroom apartments in the heart of Downtown Frederick, 126 S Market St is full of historic charm and character blended with modern convenience and aesthetics. The apartments have been thoughtfully designed, featuring beautiful custom kitchens with European appliances and granite countertops, sleek and spacious bathrooms with rainfall showers, new hardwood floors throughout, in-unit washer and dryers, digital thermostats and new HVAC, tank-less water heaters, keyless entry and ample storage. Each unit has its own unique layout and highlights many of the building’s original architectural features. The builders were careful to reuse elements from the the fire-ravaged building whenever possible — such as the reclaimed wood that makes up banisters, countertops and shelving throughout each unit. All five units are available for rent beginning January 1 or earlier, with rates from $1500-$2000 per month. Pets are negotiable […]

Redevelopment of Historic Whitehill’s Row in Downtown Frederick
What appears to be an inconspicuous row of three-story homes nestled along B&O Ave, is actually an exciting redevelopment project for the southeast corner of Downtown Frederick, Maryland. Originally built by Frederick businessman James Whitehill in 1858, the block of homes sit adjacent to the MARC train Brunswick Line, which offers weekday commuter service between Frederick and Washington D.C. For many years, the buildings were left largely unmodernized and, most recently, served as residentail rental units. However, in 2018, Frederick County natives Michael Gordon and David Bauer purchased the properties and have been busy rehabilitating the units into modernized four-bedroom, three-bathroom homes. After more than a year of painstaking renovations, the rewards of Bauer and Gordon’s investment are obvious. Each home features four levels of living space – from a fully renovated walkout basement level all the way to the third floor bedrooms – they left no detail unfinished. During a property tour with Bauer, he pointed out the many historic features they were careful to retain in the finished design, including the 34 windows across the front façade, which are all original to the building. The Partnership is featuring this project as an example of the exciting redevelopment projects […]

Unprecedented Times Mean You Have an Opportunity for Impact Unprecedented times call on each and every one of us to support our local community. By following social distancing guidance, we can each do our part in flattening the curve, keeping others safe and preventing our critical healthcare facilities from being overwhelmed. While we’re all in this together, at times of crisis, those things we hold dear are always first in our thoughts. Friends and family. Places we love. I have had the good fortune to work for Downtown Frederick Partnership for more than 15 years. For those less familiar with the organization, the Partnership works year-round to enhance, promote and preserve the vitality and livability of Downtown Frederick. I am personally and professionally vested in this community. When I think about what I hold dear, Downtown Frederick is at the top of my list. I value Downtown Frederick as the place I go to mark life’s milestones, the place where the downtown businesses are made up of not only people I work with but also my friends, the place where I can find things that exist nowhere else in this world and the place where I feel at home. This past […]

May is the time of year when Downtown Frederick should be buzzing with excitement – residents gearing up for a summer full of community events, shop owners throwing open their doors to bustling streets full of visitors and urban parks filled with people enjoying the beautiful weather. While we can still count on the beautiful weather, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of our communities in ways that we could never have imagined just a few short months ago. Downtown Frederick Partnership encourages Frederick to continue staying at home and to keep following all social distancing guidelines for as long as they are in effect. It takes each of us doing our part to reduce the spread of the coronavirus and help keep our community healthy. With this in mind, the Partnership announces the following change to its summer events season: Alive @ Five is postponed until further notice. The Partnership will not launch its weekly outdoor happy hour series until all stay-at-home orders have been lifted, it is once again deemed safe to allow public gatherings and any necessary event changes can be implemented to ensure the safety of event attendees, volunteers, staff and band members. Art on Main: Virtual Tile Project
Art on Main We have a virtual art project for our community… all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate! Download your flower template from downtownfrederick.org/artonmain and get creative. More about the Art on Main project: This fall, the five Main Street communities of Frederick County — Brunswick Main Street, Main Street Thurmont, Middletown Main Street, Town of New Market and Downtown Frederick Partnership — will be installing temporary public art sculptures in each of our downtowns. The sculptures will be composed of brightly glazed mosaic tile designs and will be in place for one year. To help decorate our sculpture, we’re looking for 60 community members to draw their own unique flower designs between now and June 27. Sculpture artist Parran Collery will then translate these designs into tiles and incorporate them in the final piece. Learn more at downtownfrederick.org/artonmain

Business Diversity in Downtown Frederick
For more than 30 years, Downtown Frederick Partnership has worked to make our community a better place. This city is our home, its residents are our neighbors and we recognize how fortunate we are to live and work here — a place that’s filled with energy, excitement, passion and drive, a place where no two people are exactly alike but we’re all dedicated to building a better tomorrow. Much of our work revolves around Downtown Frederick’s small business community — the people and places that create the vibrant spirit that attracts so many of us to Frederick. When you shop or dine downtown, it’s so much more than a simple transaction. You’re a neighbor supporting a neighbor, a stranger turned friend, a favorite regular or a welcomed first-time visitor. Getting to know a business is pretty easy, just walk in the door and say hello. We wanted to expand that conversation and give our business owners a chance to introduce themselves by self-identifying in a new way on our website. Using our new Business Diversity page, you now can search for businesses that are woman-owned, owned by a person of color, veteran-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, have an ASL-fluent staff member, and many […]

30 Years in Downtown Frederick
Founded in 1990 as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, Downtown Frederick Partnership is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2020, and what better way to celebrate than to look back on the history of Downtown Frederick Partnership and how it all began… 1970s Downtown Frederick is in a significantly deteriorated state – impacted by significant flooding, the loss of major retailers to the first mall in Frederick and the development of interstates that connect residents with DC/Baltimore. Committed citizens begin work to create a more viable Downtown Frederick. Citizen groups achieve several successes. These efforts built the foundation for future organizations. 1989 Fueled by citizens’ initial efforts, Ken Rice, representing the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, recommends a new economic development group to focus on the downtown business district to stimulate economic climate.Mayor Paul Gordon supports new organization – Greater Frederick Development Corporation (GDFC) a non-profit organization with a 25-person board of directors: Robert E. Building Business
Downtown Frederick boasts a walkable retail area filled with more than 200 independently owned shops, many housed in historic buildings. You’ll find just what you want—home furnishings, fashion, outdoor gear, toys and antiques, unique dining spaces, comfort food and cutting edge cuisine, arts and entertainment venues and so much more. Supporting these businesses is of utmost importance to our organization and the Partnership has been building this community for 30 years. The Partnership provides support to existing businesses that have been here for many years and to those businesses looking to call Downtown Frederick home. Our staff communicates daily with our businesses, answering questions about programs, providing technical assistance, adding jobs listings to our website, dropping off important literature to provide to visitors, celebrating grand openings and anniversaries and so much more. Thirteen years ago, the Partnership launched Competitive Edge, a series of workshops focused on topics of interest to our entrepreneurs and their staff. This series provides valuable sessions to our entrepreneurs and their staff, to maintain and maximize their operations. The Partnership knows that small businesses do not have easy access to training to continually sharpen their competitive edge and this series helps to fill that gap. As […]
Building for Resilience
In the thirty years since the Partnership’s founding, Downtown Frederick has weathered many storms. The Partnership has always been a place where the community can turn in these times of crisis and these past few months have been no different. Since March, the Partnership has been working diligently to respond to the most difficult challenge downtown has faced since the devastating flood of 1976. Even prior to the Governor’s state of emergency declaration, Partnership staff were providing daily support, communication and guidance to our downtown businesses community. We shifted events such as First Saturday and Alive @ Five online temporarily and encouraged the greater community to continue their vital support for downtown by promoting carry out and curbside pickup for our restaurants and retail establishments. As the impact continued, we’ve continued to launch and support our business community, which has included: Communicating with the downtown business community each day since mid-March on new programs and webinars, updates to regulations and other resources to help the businesses survive the impacts of the pandemicLaunching the Small Business Resiliency Series in response to the COVID-19 pandemicCreating a Lending Library with items like cameras, hand tools, business books, audio equipment and more, for our […]
Destination Downtown
Have you heard of the term “third place?” For most, a third place is the place between home (first) and work (second). In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement and establishing feelings of a sense of place. According to Project for Public Spaces, there will never be a time when the work of establishing a third place is done. “Real-world communities are incredibly dynamic, ever-changing things. A public space cannot be finished any more than the city in which it resides can be. At their best, public spaces are the most tangible reflections of cities and neighborhoods and the people who make them special. They are stages for public life, and should reflect the people who live, work, and play nearby.” The Partnership recognizes that Downtown Frederick is a third place for many. For some, it’s our first, second and third places and we strive each day to make Downtown Frederick a destination and home for all in our community. Over the last 30 years, the Partnership has been continually striving to make Downtown Frederick not only a third place but your favorite third place. […]
Cultivating Community in Downtown Frederick
The Partnership cultivates community – through events, experiences, and the work we do each day, to bring an opportunity for all to connect, engage, make memories and celebrate what makes us each unique. Community engagement and the momentum generated by placemaking is essential in generating longer-term positive economic outcomes and the Partnership is committed to making Downtown Frederick a continually successful place. Downtown Frederick Partnership’s Alive @ Five event is not only our organization’s largest fundraising event, it also provides an opportunity for our business and resident communities to intermingle, while listening to bands they may have never heard before. Music brings the community together and, with 21 events each year, the Partnership is able to offer a variety of bands from different genres and backgrounds. Bands are selected by an Alive @ Five selection committee, representing a wide variety of backgrounds and people who all love music. Continuing to activate the creek, Movie Night on Carroll Creek is a free, family-friendly event the Partnership launched in 2014. Keeping this event free and open to the public was a priority of the organization, and each year the event has been supported by great community partners who believe in offering programming […]
Living in Downtown Frederick
The friendly faces, lively spaces and sense of community in Downtown Frederick make it much more than a destination – it’s our home. We’re fortunate to live in a community full of great people, focused on making each day better than the last. Downtown Frederick Partnership is focused on improving quality of life downtown. Each year, the Partnership tackles strategic initiatives to make living downtown easier and better. By choosing to live here, our residents are a key part of keeping our city’s historic buildings great. Whether you’re a home owner, renter, business owner or simply someone who loves Downtown Frederick, you understand that this city’s wealth of historic buildings is what sets our community apart. To help answer some of the most common questions about making building changes in the historic district, the City of Frederick Historic Preservation staff planners and Downtown Frederick Partnership created a series of general guides for residents, merchants and contractors who live and work here to help guide these groups through the process of improving our historic buildings. The Partnership is committed to reimagining and advancing our community to welcome more residents to our downtown. Over the course of the last 30 years, the […]

Small Business Lending Library
Small businesses are facing unprecedented challenges in the wake of COVID-19. To help meet those challenges, Downtown Frederick Partnership launched its Small Business Resiliency Series in June 2020. This free program provides small businesses throughout Frederick County with access to educational webinars, hands-on professional support and peer-to-peer working groups. Learn more about the Resiliency Series at downtownfrederick.org/resiliency. As part of the Resiliency Series, Downtown Frederick Partnership established a new resource for Frederick County businesses — a Small Business Lending Library, which provides free access to tools and resources that are useful when running your own business. The Lending Library consists of five kits, which businesses may borrow for up to 3 days at a time. The kits contain items that most small businesses will need at some point — but which may be difficult to justify investing in, especially if it’s an item that they’ll use only 1 or 2 times. Some of the items included in the library are related to a topic that was specifically covered during a Resiliency Series webinar (such as the Mobile Photo Studio, which relates to establishing e-commerce and making online sales for small businesses) and some items were specifically requested by the Downtown Frederick business […]

How to Spend your Downtown Frederick Gift Card
How to Spend your Downtown Frederick Gift Card You got a Downtown Frederick Gift Card over the holidays, and now you’re wondering how to use it! With more than 190 businesses that accept the card, your options are basically limitless — but here are a few of our favorite suggestions to get you going. Our biggest tip? Spend it now!! Help our downtown businesses make it through these winter months by spending your gift card in January, February or March. Winter months typically are slower for any small business, and after the year we’ve all had… you could use an excuse to “treat yourself,” and the businesses could use a little extra cash in their registers. It’s a win-win situation all around! Using your gift card now also makes it last longer! While the funds on your card never expire, you do need to use your card at least once every 12 months in order to avoid a $2.50 monthly inactivity fee. Every time you use your gift card, that 12-month countdown restarts — so as long as you use your card at least once a year you can avoid these fees entirely! Not ready to leave the house just […]

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Community Outreach Summary
In 2020, the Partnership began a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion outreach effort guided by Dr. Denise Rollins with The Whole Heart Center. This effort started with 9 focus groups and included a community survey conducted in July 2021, which received 295 responses. As the Partnership works to make Downtown Frederick a welcoming place for everyone, we are very encouraged by the number of people who participated in the focus groups and survey, offering honest feedback about their experiences in Downtown Frederick. The input received to date provides a road map for the Partnership, both as we take on new projects and as we continue to learn more. The results of this initial outreach effort are summarized in the document linked here. Moving forward, we look forward to hearing from and partnering with community members – both new and old to the organization. If you are interested in getting involved in these efforts, please reach out to the Partnership at mainstreet@downtownfrederick.org or call the office at 301.698.8118. Maxwell Ave Fence in Downtown Frederick
Maxwell Ave is a highly-trafficked alleyway in the heart of Downtown Frederick. Providing a connection between the Carroll Creek Parking Garage, C. Burr Artz Public Library, Carroll Creek and Patrick Street – there are easily hundreds of people a day who traverse through this small piece of the city. To help brighten things up a bit, the Partnership and Hood College partnered together to repaint a fence… adding a bit of cheer along the way! Thank you to everyone involved! Especially to Dream House for helping us pick the color palette, The City of Frederick and National Museum of Civil War Medicine for letting us try something new with their fence, and to Hood College and members of our board for volunteering their time and labor! Step 1: Prep + Prime Before the new colorful motif could go into place, we first had to prep our canvas. This meant pulling weeds, sweeping around the base of the fence, scraping off old paint and adding a fresh coat of primer. Thank you to our hardworking board members for volunteering an evening to help get everything prepped and ready! Step 2: Bring on the Colors A group of about 15 Hood College […]

Happy Stripe in Downtown Frederick
Over the past year, a bright red structure has snaked its way down the alleyway between JoJo’s and Vintage MC. Happy Stripe – with its curving lines, soaring heights and vivid color palette, has certainly made a statement on Patrick Street – bringing the alleyway to life and piquing the curiosity of those who wander by. Designed by artist Kiki Goti of SomePeople studio, Happy Stripe is a playful linear structure that aims to intrigue pedestrians and encourage them to pass through it. In addition to its strong visual presence, it also offers people the chance to interact with the structure through an augmented reality app that lets viewers challenge one another from their phones, tossing virtual balls into the nylon ropes that hang from the top of Happy Stripe’s steel frame. Happy Stripe is one of two projects installed through the Partnership’s unchARTed initiative – a project that increases connectivity between some of Downtown Frederick’s forgotten “between” spaces by activating alleyways with temporary public art installations. Happy Stripe was installed in November 2020 and will be removed in mid-November 2021. More about unchARTed
TONIQ: A Mercantile Rehab in Downtown Frederick
Chandra & Anitha Soma took over the building at 89 S Market St in July 2020. Now, after nearly a year and a half of top-to-bottom renovations, the couple prepares to celebrate the grand opening of TONIQ: Beer, Wine, Deli & More in the heart of Downtown Frederick. The Somas have completely revitalized the space – combining the previously vacant building at 3 W All Saints St with the Market Street storefront, knocking down walls to create a large open retail area, and replacing every surface of their now modern, code-compliant facility. Their work has included brand new ceilings, floors, lighting, paint, awnings, and a brand new check-out counter, plus updated fixtures to fill the reorganized space. You’ll notice their hard work from the moment you enter the door at the corner of S Market & All Saints Streets, which now boasts an ADA-compliant ramp with safety railings to make the building more accessible. The Somas’ investment in this property has been substantial. They recognized the building’s potential – and, with the support of grant funding from Downtown Frederick Partnership’s Mission: Interior and Façade Grant programs, as well as the City of Frederick’s GROW Grant, they have created a new […]
