At 3 PM Sunday May 5 and 7:30 PM Monday May 6, The Frederick Chorale will present a uniquely creative concert–Mystic Fire: American Poems in Song at the intimate New Spire Art stage at 15 W. Patrick Street.
The concert celebrates American poetry– both spoken and sung. The event highlights many well-known poets (Walt Whitman, Sara Teasdale, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and e.e.cummings, plus new poets, Naomi Shihab Nye, David Warner, Li Young Lee, and Gabrielle Calvocoressi. The music to which these poems are set is varied: from romantic to jazzy to child-like.
Mystic Fire: American Poems in Song also features talented Frederick County Shout Out Loud poetry program contestants, as well as the Maryland State contest winner. Poetry Out Loud encourages memorization and recitation:students choose from a group of 900 approved poems, whose themes are classic–love, loss, beauty, inspiration, childhood, and nature… Attendees will enjoy the creative ways students present a poem. They will also delight in the styles that composers choose to enhance the meaning of a poem for chorus.
NOTE: Programs with all the poems will be provided to concert goers. Please join us for this special event!
