The story of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Thomas Augusta M.D @ National Museum of Civil War Medicine

The story of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Thomas Augusta, M.D. is a fascinating account of the journey of a man of African descent, living in America in the 19th century, becoming the highest-ranking military officer of his “race” during the Civil War. He was a physician, businessman, and Civil Rights icon. He was the first person of African descent to be commissioned regimental surgeon with the rank of Major in the Union army. He had to overcome many obstacles to become a physician and later a regimental surgeon. It is my sincere desire that this presentation will introduce you to, and/or enhance your knowledge of Dr. Augusta. Also, it is important to understand the problems that he faced while delivering ” faithful and meritorious service” to his nation and his people.
