Composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith will honor Lester Bowie with a program of solo works. For over 50 years, Smith has expanded American music as a composer and improviser. His epic portrayal of the Civil Rights Movement, Ten Freedom Summers, was a Finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Documented on over 100 recordings, Smith’s music combines compositional design and spontaneous inspiration to create resonant messages about freedom, tradition, and respect.
