One of the rarest heritage breeds of hogs, the Black Hog is listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory as endangered with fewer than 300 breeding hogs registered today. Compared to other breeds, the flavors of the Black Hog’s meat is exceptional. The lean micro-marbled meat is extra tender due to the breed’s short muscle fibers. This produces a tender, moist cut of pork with an exquisite and unique taste. We thought it was only fitting to choose this name to represent the fine quality of food and service that we offer at the restaurant.

Frederick County’s original brewpub. Brewer’s Alley is proud to continue the long history of beer making in a town known for its deep appreciation of fine fermented spirits. The name itself is taken from a page of history. Brewer’s Alley was located on what is currently South Court Street. Beer Production ceased in 1901 when a large fire consumed the brewery of John Kuhn, who was the last in a long line of brewers to occupy space along the banks of Carroll Creek. For over 153 years, from the very beginning of Frederick County, Brewer’s Alley was a fixture in the social and economic landscape of Frederick. Ninety-five years after leaving Frederick, Brewer’s Alley is back! We invite you to visit and enjoy the house beers at our distinctive bar or rooftop deck, as well as some of the Finest Culinary Creations in one of our beautiful dining rooms. In the heart of Downtown Frederick, Brewer’s Alley has become a favorite destination for local residents and worldwide travelers alike.

Since opening in September 2013, Curious Iguana has quickly become a popular literary hub for locals and tourists alike. Our globally diverse collection and vibrant events calendar reflect the Iguana’s mission of “Get To Know Your World.” Our welcoming and knowledgeable team of booksellers makes browsing at the Iguana a unique and pleasant experience. In addition to being a bookstore and a community gathering space, the Iguana is a benefit corporation. Each month, we donate a portion of the store’s sales to international non-profits (more than $43,300 as of June 2017). The pins in the map behind our counter show the countries where our customers’ purchases have helped make a world of difference. We also have a big heart for the Frederick community, offering as much support as we can to local schools, non-profits, and other organizations. That’s why the change jar on our counter doesn’t fund pizza deliveries—it’s for COIPP, a wonderful non-profit that provides much-needed resources for children of incarcerated parents in our community. We started Elegant Forever over 10 years ago based on the belief that there should be something in between fancy, over-priced shops and discount bridal outlets. There should be a place where brides aren’t pressured on time and limited on the number of wedding dresses they can try on. And being practical about your budget shouldn’t mean you can’t find a wedding dress that makes you look beautiful. Most importantly, a place where personalized service takes a front seat to the rushed and snooty service found at many bridal boutiques or bridal shops. We believe shopping for your wedding dress is the most important purchase of your life. And we feel fortunate to be part of your journey. We are a small, personalized bridal shop and we’re confident we can help you find the perfect dress!

Everedy Square & Shab Row is Downtown Frederick’s largest cluster of specialty shops, eateries and services housed in beautifully restored 19th Century buildings in historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland. Restored and preserved, the Everedy Square & Shab Row district offers relaxing shopping experiences in historic buildings spread over three blocks on East Street. The dwellings which comprise shops on Shab Row formerly housed tinkers, wheelwrights and other artisans who serviced the first stagecoaches traveling west on The National Pike (now known as US Route 40). The buildings of Everedy Square were once the home of the Everedy Company, where the Everedy Bottle Capper was invented and manufactured. The product met with national success following the enactment of Prohibition. Prospering for 50 years, The Everedy Company ultimately produced a line of kitchenware that is still used in many households today. The area was purchased and restored by Frederick businessman, Bert Anderson, in the 1970s and 1980s to produce the vital shopping and business district that it is today.

In 1998, Kim Firestone and his partner Kathy Wasley closed Café Delight, a little yogurt and sandwich shop they had been operating for five years in a Frederick, Maryland strip mall. They jumped into a bigger venture. Kim bought a restaurant in downtown Frederick called Donnelly’s and renamed it Firestone’s Culinary Tavern. The new restaurant opened in the spring of 1999 and, bolstered in the kitchen by the appointment of Chef Jack Walker, quickly grew in popularity to become an important part of Frederick’s increasingly dynamic and diverse restaurant scene. Seven years later, when the owner of an adjacent building decided she wanted to retire, Firestone bought the building and transformed it into a specialty food market named Market on Market (it’s on Market Street). Nine years after that, the next building up the street was to become the third member of the team. A little more shuffling was necessary, however. The Market moved into the third building, after a total makeover, and what had been the Market was transformed into an extension of the restaurant named The Raw Bar, featuring oysters and charcuterie in a completely remodeled facility. And that’s where it stands today, a long stretch from Café […]

Long, long ago, in the ancient Mediterranean, someone, some anonymous HERO, decided to smash up some chickpeas and BOOM. The art of eating hummus was born. (or is it birthed? Idk, but if we knew the exact date this happened I would celebrate it.) Hummus has been savored all over the world for thousands of years because of it’s versatile (and delicious) nature. In fact, hummus can fulfill almost all of your body’s nutritional needs and it’s super rich in vitamins + minerals. So after years of keeping the good stuff all to myself, I decided to just make more and share it with you guys, in hopes that it’ll help you live well and feel good. Just trying to keep it kosher with my body, mind and mother nature. Come hang out with me at a farmer’s market this summer so we can chill and eat hummus in the sun like our ancestors did thousands of years ago! Hand-crafted in Frederick, MD. Established 2016.

The Hollerstown Hill Bed & Breakfast, established in 2002, is located in a quiet downtown Frederick neighborhood. It is a wonderful example of late victorian architecture built in c.1900 by Sarah and Richard Dutrow, owners in the late 1800s of the Dutrow Confectionary. The bed & breakfast is graced with carved mantels, fireplaces, period antiques, reproductions, and collectibles. For example, Betty displays her large collection of dolls throughout the house. There is a game room in which you’ll find a traditional pool table plus nooks for board games, including a chess set with Civil War characters. The four uniquely decorated guest rooms are spacious, each with sitting area and en suite bath, air conditioning, and cable TV. Begin your day with freshly brewed coffee or tea. Indulge in a full country breakfast featuring home-baked breads, fresh fruit, juices/ smoothies, yogurt, granola, and sumptuous breakfast casseroles. Guests can relax on the wrap-around porch or garden patios, enjoy the game room, or leisurely stroll to the center of downtown Frederick’s charming historic district to visit the shops, museums, local events, and numerous restaurants. There are many additional historic sites a short drive away. Your hosts/proprietors, Betty and Phil LeBlanc look forward to making your visit a memorable one.

We make and carry traditional colonial furnishings and folk art by true American artisans. Primitive Homespuns began over 16 years ago in the spare bedroom of my house. I was a former art major and stay at home mom for two wonderful children looking for a way to get creative. So, I started sewing pillows and table runners. Then dolls and animals. I would handle the sewing and my mom would handle the stuffing. We participated in craft shows and church bazaars, slowly building our business. We were a perfect pairing of art and creativity with great energy and humor.

This makes us very unique in the industry. Most furniture sold today is imported and made from some type of laminate. This sets us apart from the majority of other retailers. We encourage you to open the drawers and examine each piece in our store and in others. You will quickly see the difference. Every day, we go to work hoping to do two things: share great coffee with our friends and help make the world a little better. It was true when the first Starbucks opened in 1971, and it’s just as true today. Back then, the company was a single store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman and chief executive officer) had first walked into a Starbucks store. From his first cup of Sumatra, Howard was drawn into Starbucks and joined a year later. In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and became captivated with Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home. He left Starbucks for a short period of time to start his own Il Giornale coffeehouses and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks […]

From the sidewalk, Stone Hearth Bakery hints at its European flair. During the summer, large pots bloomed profusely out front, amidst quaint sign boards announcing the daily specials. Along the side of the building, facing East Church, bistro tables with large umbrellas, amidst more gorgeous flowers, provided a place to retreat and enjoy a sandwich or sweet. But with summer gone and fall full upon us, the bakery beckons even more with hot, comforting soups, thick, satisfying sandwiches . . . and of course, the lure of fresh-baked breads and desserts.

Back in 1965, Fred DeLuca set out to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Searching for a way to help pay for his education, a family friend suggested he open a submarine sandwich shop. With a loan of $1,000, the friend—Dr. Peter Buck—offered to become Fred’s partner, and a business relationship was forged that would change the landscape of the fast food industry. The first shop was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. Then, they set a goal of having 32 stores opened in 10 years. Fred soon learned the basics of running a business, as well as the importance of serving a well-made, high quality product, providing excellent customer service, keeping operating costs low and finding great locations. These early lessons continue to serve as the foundation for successful SUBWAY restaurants around the world.

Exceptional dining awaits you at VOLT in historic Frederick, Maryland, where Executive Chef Bryan Voltaggio’s seasonal entreés showcase classic flavor combinations prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Quartered within a spectacular 19th Century brownstone mansion, the restaurant’s distinctive ambience combines Victorian elegance with contemporary, urban sophistication. The restaurant’s Main Dining Room, awash in a palette of amber and burnt rose, pays homage to the building’s original Gilded Era construction. The glass enclosed, oval-shaped Conservatory – designated for private dining – yields panoramic views of the mansion’s walled garden. Victorian subtlety gives way to the excitement and intensity of the contemporary Chef’s Dining Room where guests can witness cuisine in creation by Chef Voltaggio and his talented kitchen staff. The lounge offers a premier destination for social exchange or casual dining – its translucent bar, upholstered seating and vintage palladian window overlooking Market Street. Less than 50 miles from Washington, D.C., Leesburg, Annapolis and Baltimore, VOLT is located in the heart of Frederick’s nationally-renowned historic district – an architectural treasure trove of 18th and 19th Century buildings which house hundreds of specialty stores, antique shops, bed and breakfasts and restaurants.

As the owner of The Muse, I have always quietly done my own mixed media, fiber based art in my spare time. It is something that has always been a large part of my life but not one that I would share very often. In 2017, I took on a personal project of creating a piece a week for the entire year. The pieces document the year from a global & personal perspective. For the month of July through Aug 26th, all 52 pieces will be on exhibit at The Delaplaine Arts Center.
52 Collage Project Exhibit
“Much of the art of the past is not only decorative but profoundly meaningful. Its formal excellence complements that meaning, typically expressed by means of symbolic images. My own sculpture derives from this tradition. My preferred medium is bronze, and I cast in my own studio foundry in Annapolis using the cire perdue, or lost wax, process.”
Burton Blistein | No Exit
“The 52 Collage Project is a narrative visual documentary of 2017. One piece was created each week. A conscious observer of human behavior and social disparities, my work is a study in the personal identification that I find within these observances.”
Whitney Dahlberg | 52 Collage Project
“The idea for Pouring came about when representational life painting had become a bit boring, leading to some experimentation with wine and markers. Pouring enabled me to create whimsical and sometimes controversial images. Sometimes, I have no direction for what I expect the final piece to look like, and I discover as I go.”

What makes you feel most loved and appreciated? Is it conveyed through words, actions, gifts, touch, or time? What would be the impact if you could more intentionally, and effectively, shower appreciation on your friends, family and co-workers? It is a basic human need to be loved and belong. We often miscommunicate, though, about this important emotional need because we ‘speak’ in our own love language rather than the language of our intended recipient. At this evening retreat, Coach Carol will lead us in a discussion about the five different languages of love and appreciation. You will leave with a greater understanding that: There are different ways to communicate appreciation and encouragement to others; Individuals value certain languages more than others; The most effective way to communicate appreciation and encouragement occurs when the message is sent in the language most valued by the receiver; Messages of appreciation and encouragement in languages not valued by the recipient will tend to miss the mark. Whether the five languages of appreciation and love are familiar or new to you, you are sure to come away from this retreat with concrete actions to give and receive the love you need and so richly deserve. The Civil War brought deprivations and horrors never before seen in this region. Soldiers camped on farmer’s properties, stripping them bare of food and supplies. Fighting took place in the streets, leading to damage to properties and wounded soldiers being treated in the city’s hospitals. The dead quickly filled row-upon-row at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Join the National Museum of Civil War Medicine’s historians for the latest Downtown Frederick walking tour on Saturday, October 6 at 3 PM. The program will focus on the worst aspects of the city’s experience during the course of the American Civil War. When fighting broke out, it was often the local residents who suffered the consequences. Buildings broken, property smashed, and livelihoods lost. Not to mention the hundreds of local men off serving in the armies of North and South, many never to return. This pay-what-you-please walking tour will unveil the true […]

A self-described “feral child who was raised in libraries,” Neil Gaiman devoured the works of authors like C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Edgar Allen Poe, and more at an early age. He began his writing career in England as a journalist then moved onto writing books and comics. His groundbreaking, award-winning series “Sandman” became the first comic ever to receive a literary award, the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story. Gaiman writes books for readers of all ages, including picture books for young readers. His books are genre works that refuse to remain true to their genres like his award-winning gothic horror work “Coraline,” originally deemed too frightening for children. He has authored many New York Times bestsellers including “Nowhere,” “Smoke and Mirrors,” “Stardust,” “American Gods” and “Fragile Things.” “American Gods” has been released in an expanded tenth anniversary edition and there is an HBO series in the works. “The Graveyard Book” received numerous awards and made Gaiman the first author ever to win both the Newberry Medal and the Carnegie Medal with the same book. He wrote the screenplay for the original BBC TV series “Neverwhere,” “Mirrormask” and co-wrote the script to Robert Zemeckis’s “Beowulf.”
