From May 7 to August 28, the Frederick Arts Council is hosting an exhibition featuring the work of Frederick artist Lisa Dillin on view at the 5 E. 2nd Street Art Center. The exhibition ‘Sorry we missed you’ features nine sculptures and a sound piece which focus on the complicated aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since March of 2020 the physical and emotional space between each of us has widened like a deep chasm along an active fault line. Once buzzing city centers – many of which were already underutilized and in decline – have gone silent. City buildings and suburban retail centers that had long ago fallen into disrepair eerily await our return. As we travel to our old familiar places we find that vestiges of what was abound. We have left traces of ourselves in every nook and cranny of our towns and cities. These human remnants are not dissimilar to messages in a bottle: they are clues to what came before, a voice waiting to be discovered. Sorry we missed you is an attempt to make tangible the emotional quality of the sustained isolation and economic decline that characterizes this time. Sorry we missed you extends an […]

TAG/The Artists Gallery is pleased to announce the featured artists for July: Cathy Wilkin and Jan McIntyre-Creager They have been exploring different subjects, media, and styles with exciting results! Cathy Wilkin switched directions for her intriguing new exhibit, “Hindsight 2020.” She traded her intricate collages for acrylic paintings. At first glance, the interiors in her new work appear calm, but unsettling elements quickly reveal themselves. Wilkin calls the eight works in this series her “COVID paintings” and says they reflect her disconnect in 2020. McIntyre-Creager’s show, “Circle in a Square,” pulls away from the imagery she’s relied on for the last three years—still lifes, buildings, and other structures—in favor of a new self-imposed assignment. “I wanted to go basic,” she says. Merlin’s Beard Band will perform during the July 3 opening reception from 5 to 8pm. Visit the website to see more.

Walk in the footsteps of doctors, nurses, soldiers and civilians who cared for 8,000 wounded soldiers in Downtown Frederick Every Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 PM from April until October, docents from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine will explain how Frederick became “One Vast Hospital.” Arguably the most trying moment in city’s history came after the Battle of Antietam in the fall of 1862. The town’s population doubled when 8,000 wounded soldiers were delivered by ambulance to make-shift hospitals throughout Frederick. Initially the walking tours will be limited to 12 participants. Masks are required throughout the tour and we request that you practice strict social distancing. Tickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members, but you must still reserve your spot. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. With accounts taken from the diaries and letters of the surgeons, soldiers, and civilians who were there, this guided walking tour will explore the locations of the city’s Civil War hospitals in churches, schools, and public buildings. This program is an excellent way to take in downtown Frederick as many […]
