One of the rarest heritage breeds of hogs, the Black Hog is listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory as endangered with fewer than 300 breeding hogs registered today. Compared to other breeds, the flavors of the Black Hog’s meat is exceptional. The lean micro-marbled meat is extra tender due to the breed’s short muscle fibers. This produces a tender, moist cut of pork with an exquisite and unique taste. We thought it was only fitting to choose this name to represent the fine quality of food and service that we offer at the restaurant.

Frederick County’s original brewpub. Brewer’s Alley is proud to continue the long history of beer making in a town known for its deep appreciation of fine fermented spirits. The name itself is taken from a page of history. Brewer’s Alley was located on what is currently South Court Street. Beer Production ceased in 1901 when a large fire consumed the brewery of John Kuhn, who was the last in a long line of brewers to occupy space along the banks of Carroll Creek. For over 153 years, from the very beginning of Frederick County, Brewer’s Alley was a fixture in the social and economic landscape of Frederick. Ninety-five years after leaving Frederick, Brewer’s Alley is back! We invite you to visit and enjoy the house beers at our distinctive bar or rooftop deck, as well as some of the Finest Culinary Creations in one of our beautiful dining rooms. In the heart of Downtown Frederick, Brewer’s Alley has become a favorite destination for local residents and worldwide travelers alike.

Welcome to Charlotte’s Cottage Quilt Shop. Our shop was named after two favorite Charlottes; my mom and my grand-daughter. Both of them love fabric. My mom never saw a border print she didn’t love. My grand-daughter loves fat quarters to use for doll blankets for her babies. We have recently moved our shop to Shab Row’s beautifully restored 19th Century buildings in Historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland. Many of the important battles of the Civil War happened very close to our door. As a quilter and a history major, I was thrilled to be able to combine both by offering 1800’s reproductions in our shop and on our website. Who doesn’t love a quilt that tells a story and will become a treasured heirloom in your own family.

Since opening in September 2013, Curious Iguana has quickly become a popular literary hub for locals and tourists alike. Our globally diverse collection and vibrant events calendar reflect the Iguana’s mission of “Get To Know Your World.” Our welcoming and knowledgeable team of booksellers makes browsing at the Iguana a unique and pleasant experience. In addition to being a bookstore and a community gathering space, the Iguana is a benefit corporation. Each month, we donate a portion of the store’s sales to international non-profits (more than $43,300 as of June 2017). The pins in the map behind our counter show the countries where our customers’ purchases have helped make a world of difference. We also have a big heart for the Frederick community, offering as much support as we can to local schools, non-profits, and other organizations. That’s why the change jar on our counter doesn’t fund pizza deliveries—it’s for COIPP, a wonderful non-profit that provides much-needed resources for children of incarcerated parents in our community. We started Elegant Forever over 10 years ago based on the belief that there should be something in between fancy, over-priced shops and discount bridal outlets. There should be a place where brides aren’t pressured on time and limited on the number of wedding dresses they can try on. And being practical about your budget shouldn’t mean you can’t find a wedding dress that makes you look beautiful. Most importantly, a place where personalized service takes a front seat to the rushed and snooty service found at many bridal boutiques or bridal shops. We believe shopping for your wedding dress is the most important purchase of your life. And we feel fortunate to be part of your journey. We are a small, personalized bridal shop and we’re confident we can help you find the perfect dress!

Everedy Square & Shab Row is Downtown Frederick’s largest cluster of specialty shops, eateries and services housed in beautifully restored 19th Century buildings in historic Downtown Frederick, Maryland. Restored and preserved, the Everedy Square & Shab Row district offers relaxing shopping experiences in historic buildings spread over three blocks on East Street. The dwellings which comprise shops on Shab Row formerly housed tinkers, wheelwrights and other artisans who serviced the first stagecoaches traveling west on The National Pike (now known as US Route 40). The buildings of Everedy Square were once the home of the Everedy Company, where the Everedy Bottle Capper was invented and manufactured. The product met with national success following the enactment of Prohibition. Prospering for 50 years, The Everedy Company ultimately produced a line of kitchenware that is still used in many households today. The area was purchased and restored by Frederick businessman, Bert Anderson, in the 1970s and 1980s to produce the vital shopping and business district that it is today.

In 1998, Kim Firestone and his partner Kathy Wasley closed Café Delight, a little yogurt and sandwich shop they had been operating for five years in a Frederick, Maryland strip mall. They jumped into a bigger venture. Kim bought a restaurant in downtown Frederick called Donnelly’s and renamed it Firestone’s Culinary Tavern. The new restaurant opened in the spring of 1999 and, bolstered in the kitchen by the appointment of Chef Jack Walker, quickly grew in popularity to become an important part of Frederick’s increasingly dynamic and diverse restaurant scene. Seven years later, when the owner of an adjacent building decided she wanted to retire, Firestone bought the building and transformed it into a specialty food market named Market on Market (it’s on Market Street). Nine years after that, the next building up the street was to become the third member of the team. A little more shuffling was necessary, however. The Market moved into the third building, after a total makeover, and what had been the Market was transformed into an extension of the restaurant named The Raw Bar, featuring oysters and charcuterie in a completely remodeled facility. And that’s where it stands today, a long stretch from Café […]

FAV is not a traditional flower shop. Each week we create a unique bouquet combining locally and globally grown flowers. You choose the size and can customize with additional flowers. We are Jackie and Liz. We have over ten years of experience designing arrangements, creating bouquets, and working with customers. We noticed that people wanted an easy way to order flowers without spending a lot of time making decisions – what vase to use, a color scheme, picking something unique, how much to spend, etc… Ordering flowers should be enjoyable and easy, and a lot of people stressed over it. We simplified the process, and Freesia and Vine was born!

Long, long ago, in the ancient Mediterranean, someone, some anonymous HERO, decided to smash up some chickpeas and BOOM. The art of eating hummus was born. (or is it birthed? Idk, but if we knew the exact date this happened I would celebrate it.) Hummus has been savored all over the world for thousands of years because of it’s versatile (and delicious) nature. In fact, hummus can fulfill almost all of your body’s nutritional needs and it’s super rich in vitamins + minerals. So after years of keeping the good stuff all to myself, I decided to just make more and share it with you guys, in hopes that it’ll help you live well and feel good. Just trying to keep it kosher with my body, mind and mother nature. Come hang out with me at a farmer’s market this summer so we can chill and eat hummus in the sun like our ancestors did thousands of years ago! Hand-crafted in Frederick, MD. Established 2016.

The Hollerstown Hill Bed & Breakfast, established in 2002, is located in a quiet downtown Frederick neighborhood. It is a wonderful example of late victorian architecture built in c.1900 by Sarah and Richard Dutrow, owners in the late 1800s of the Dutrow Confectionary. The bed & breakfast is graced with carved mantels, fireplaces, period antiques, reproductions, and collectibles. For example, Betty displays her large collection of dolls throughout the house. There is a game room in which you’ll find a traditional pool table plus nooks for board games, including a chess set with Civil War characters. The four uniquely decorated guest rooms are spacious, each with sitting area and en suite bath, air conditioning, and cable TV. Begin your day with freshly brewed coffee or tea. Indulge in a full country breakfast featuring home-baked breads, fresh fruit, juices/ smoothies, yogurt, granola, and sumptuous breakfast casseroles. Guests can relax on the wrap-around porch or garden patios, enjoy the game room, or leisurely stroll to the center of downtown Frederick’s charming historic district to visit the shops, museums, local events, and numerous restaurants. There are many additional historic sites a short drive away. Your hosts/proprietors, Betty and Phil LeBlanc look forward to making your visit a memorable one.

Maxwell’s Burgers & Shakes is a fast gourmet restaurant focusing on burgers & shakes made from the highest local ingredients we can find. We opened Maxwell’s to be Frederick’s go to “to go” restaurant. The great cooking minds of The Wine Kitchen, our flagship restaurant, created a fun menu designed to satisfy all ages and appetites. Whether you prefer a burger made from local Angus beef, American wagyu, tuna, beets or “impossible meat” – you’ll find it here. Along with that, count on enjoying some of the most delicious fries, salads and shakes of your life. We’re confident because we prepare our food using the freshest, most high quality ingredients – locally sourced whenever possible. All of our house-made vanilla and chocolate soft serve milkshakes are delicious on their own – but add fresh strawberries or house-made caramel for an out-of-body experience. Our shakes, as well as all the items on the kid’s menu, were individually taste tested by the children of our staff. In addition to choosing recipes for their ingredients and signature preparation, we also selected menu items that travel well. This is important for those who intend to turn Maxwell’s “to go” into lunch at Carroll Creek […]

We make and carry traditional colonial furnishings and folk art by true American artisans. Primitive Homespuns began over 16 years ago in the spare bedroom of my house. I was a former art major and stay at home mom for two wonderful children looking for a way to get creative. So, I started sewing pillows and table runners. Then dolls and animals. I would handle the sewing and my mom would handle the stuffing. We participated in craft shows and church bazaars, slowly building our business. We were a perfect pairing of art and creativity with great energy and humor.

Little’s Furniture was originally founded in 1980 in Hancock, MD. by owner Sam Little. He had a strong passion for antique furniture. Little’s Furniture still offers antiques but primarily sells new reproductions. In 1994, Sam decided to move his business to Downtown Frederick. We specialize in working with North American builders that make all of their furniture without veneers or particle board. This makes us very unique in the industry. Most furniture sold today is imported and made from some type of laminate. This sets us apart from the majority of other retailers. We encourage you to open the drawers and examine each piece in our store and in others. You will quickly see the difference. At the South Mountain Creamery Ice Cream Shop, we take ice cream to a whole new level. Fresh-from-the-farm ice cream is transformed into tasty treats like sundaes, milkshakes, and more. We even make our own waffle cones in-house and have just about every topping under the sun. For example, we bet you’ve never heard of a Breakfast Trash Sundae. It’s a whole heap of our farm-fresh Vanilla Ice Cream infused with Cap’n Crunch, Frosted Flakes, Corn Pops, Fruity Pebbles, Fruit Loops, house-made caramel sauce, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. It is a “wake up early, run down stairs, and watch cartoons” type of sundae. This over-the-top ice cream experience will change the way you think about frozen treats. Every day, we go to work hoping to do two things: share great coffee with our friends and help make the world a little better. It was true when the first Starbucks opened in 1971, and it’s just as true today. Back then, the company was a single store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman and chief executive officer) had first walked into a Starbucks store. From his first cup of Sumatra, Howard was drawn into Starbucks and joined a year later. In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and became captivated with Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home. He left Starbucks for a short period of time to start his own Il Giornale coffeehouses and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks […]

From the sidewalk, Stone Hearth Bakery hints at its European flair. During the summer, large pots bloomed profusely out front, amidst quaint sign boards announcing the daily specials. Along the side of the building, facing East Church, bistro tables with large umbrellas, amidst more gorgeous flowers, provided a place to retreat and enjoy a sandwich or sweet. But with summer gone and fall full upon us, the bakery beckons even more with hot, comforting soups, thick, satisfying sandwiches . . . and of course, the lure of fresh-baked breads and desserts.

From May 7 to August 28, the Frederick Arts Council is hosting an exhibition featuring the work of Frederick artist Lisa Dillin on view at the 5 E. 2nd Street Art Center. The exhibition ‘Sorry we missed you’ features nine sculptures and a sound piece which focus on the complicated aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since March of 2020 the physical and emotional space between each of us has widened like a deep chasm along an active fault line. Once buzzing city centers – many of which were already underutilized and in decline – have gone silent. City buildings and suburban retail centers that had long ago fallen into disrepair eerily await our return. As we travel to our old familiar places we find that vestiges of what was abound. We have left traces of ourselves in every nook and cranny of our towns and cities. TAG is pleased to present Rhonda J. Smith’s solo show, Seasons of Grace Smith is a practicing artist and retired art professor who lives near Keedysville, MD. She uses non-toxic inks and a non-traditional approach of mounting her large-scale linoleum prints to archival boards. Says Smith, “Just prior to the COVID outbreak, while in New York City, I encountered a reliquary figure from medieval Europe in a gallery. After I returned home I discovered that this sculpture continued to be part of my thoughts. Out of all the work I saw, it was this medieval sculpture that most intrigued me. Perhaps it was because this object contained something that was meant to empower it and imbue it with significance beyond the sculpture itself. I love the idea that art can empower, protect, or heal.“ The show runs from June 4 through June 27. Smith will be at The Artists Gallery on June 5 for First Saturday and will host a lecture and demonstration of her process on June 17 at 6 p.m. Work by other TAG artists will also be shown. Gallery hours are noon to 8 on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 4 on Sundays. Admission is free.

Market Street closed to vehicular traffic between Patrick & 3rd Streets on June 26, July 24 and August 28 (11AM-11PM). As The City of Frederick and its businesses continue to safely reopen with fewer restrictions, the City is excited to announce the return of Pop-Up Dining along Market Street on select summer Saturdays. On June 26, July 24 and August 28 (fourth Saturdays), Market Street will be closed to vehicles from 11AM to 11PM to allow in-the-street dining between Patrick Street and 3rd Street. Participating restaurants will place tables in the roadway to expand outdoor dining opportunities, much like the effort put in place last summer during restricted dining orders. Since last summer, additional parklets have been placed along Market Street to offer restaurants expanded outdoor dining capacity seven days a week. The parklets will remain in place to continue that opportunity. In addition to pop-up dining, many events are returning to the community this summer. Walk in the footsteps of doctors, nurses, soldiers and civilians who cared for 8,000 wounded soldiers in Downtown Frederick Every Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 PM from April until October, docents from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine will explain how Frederick became “One Vast Hospital.” Arguably the most trying moment in city’s history came after the Battle of Antietam in the fall of 1862. Masks are required throughout the tour and we request that you practice strict social distancing. Tickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members, but you must still reserve your spot. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. With accounts taken from the diaries and letters of the surgeons, soldiers, and civilians who were there, this guided walking tour will explore the locations of the city’s Civil War hospitals in churches, schools, and public buildings. TAG/The Artists Gallery is pleased to announce the featured artists for July: Cathy Wilkin and Jan McIntyre-Creager They have been exploring different subjects, media, and styles with exciting results! Cathy Wilkin switched directions for her intriguing new exhibit, “Hindsight 2020.” She traded her intricate collages for acrylic paintings. At first glance, the interiors in her new work appear calm, but unsettling elements quickly reveal themselves. Wilkin calls the eight works in this series her “COVID paintings” and says they reflect her disconnect in 2020. McIntyre-Creager’s show, “Circle in a Square,” pulls away from the imagery she’s relied on for the last three years—still lifes, buildings, and other structures—in favor of a new self-imposed assignment. “I wanted to go basic,” she says. Merlin’s Beard Band will perform during the July 3 opening reception from 5 to 8pm. Visit the website to see more.

Multi-Grammy award winning blues rocker John Hiatt (“Have a Little Faith in Me,” “Slow Turning”) and acclaimed bluegrass singer-songwriter Jerry Douglas (“Gone to Fortingall”) join forces to perform the greatest hits from their distinguished careers and music from their upcoming release Leftover Feelings. “All the Lilacs in Ohio” is the first video released from John Hiatt with The Jerry Douglas Band’s forthcoming album, Leftover Feelings, available May 21, 2021. This project and video were recorded in Historic RCA Studio B, continuing the studio’s legacy as a “temple of sound,” and creating documentary resources for use by the nonprofit Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum. These educational materials showcase recording methods reminiscent of those practiced in the 1950s and 60s, with Hiatt, Douglas and band members making and recording music in real time by listening to each other and emotionally reacting through their spontaneous performances.
