The Delaplaine Arts Center welcomes Toronto based artist, Amanda McCavour, for a stunning new exhibition, “Embroidered Spaces,” opening on Saturday, September 2. McCavour uses a sewing machine to create thread drawings and installations. Through an exploration of line and its 2–D and 3–D implications, stitch is used to explore various concepts such as connections to home and the fibers of the body. McCavour is interested in thread’s assumed vulnerability, its ability to unravel, and its strength when sewn together. She shows her works, which are created on-site, in galleries throughout her native Canada and internationally. “Embroidered Spaces” opens to the public Saturday, September 2 and will be on view through October 31. Admission to the Delaplaine’s galleries is free. Delaplaine Hours: Monday-Saturday, 9AM-5PM Sunday, 11AM-5PM McCavour will give a free online artist’s talk on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00 p.m. She will discuss her process and the ideas behind “Embroidered Spaces.” The artist will travel from Canada to Frederick in order to teach her unique embroidery technique in a special workshop at The Delaplaine Arts Center. Embroidered Botany: Hand Stitching and Water-Soluble Stabilizer will take place October 30 & 31 and is open to anyone 15 and older. Workshop capacity […]

DISTRICT Arts presents “Moments,” an exhibition of watercolor and fluid acrylic paintings by April M. Rimpo Rimpo’s favorite quote on art is by Ivan Lissner: “The secret of great art – to rob the moment of its impermanence.” Her exhibition titled “Moments” reflects that quotation. Part of telling stories with April’s art is conveying the emotional response to the subject. She sees beauty everywhere she travels, be it to a large city, a small U.S town, or somewhere abroad. April feels a piece is complete when the mood she wants is achieved and the story shines through. Real success comes, however, when others tell her the story they see in the painting. The exhibition runs from September 1 through September 26, including First Saturday. It is free and open to the public. Visit districtarts.com/moments for more information.

“Sweet Dreams” & Artist Reception w/ Karen Peacock Meet Karen and chat about her exhibition on display from 5-8pm during the Artist Reception! Pajama Days contains 16 works made up of vintage sleepwear, drawings, paint, book pages, and more. “This project was started during the COVID 19 lockdown with what was on hand. The title reflects the fashion choices of that time,” says Peacock. These mixed-media works can hang separately or in site-specific modular groupings. Also on view is National Treasures: a subjective selection of 25 great Americans.

“Sunlight & Water” & Artist Reception w/Tom Semmes Meet Tom and chat about his exhibition on display from 5-8pm during the Artist Reception! “Sunlight & Water” features Tom Semmes’ recent oil paintings on canvas or archival paper. The works reflect his long-term interest in the nuances of light and the changing seasons of both urban and rural settings. Most of the paintings were started en plein air and finished in the studio. Semmes is inspired by his home in downtown Frederick, Maryland, as well as his travels in France and Italy. Rich colors and expressive brushstrokes define his landscapes. The show features a series that captures the view outside of his studio window: “They are,” says Semmes, “a record, like Monet’s haystacks, of one subject under changing conditions.”

September Featured Artist: Doug Moulden Doug Moulden is showing his new, never before seen works! These are a series of paintings that explore the parts of the world that both fill him with wonder yet give him a feeling of disquiet. He uses an additive approach when constructing the paintings, using many different materials that are glued to panels. Painting only occurs after the panels are constructed and is a more intuitive and less structured process than the actual construction. One of Doug’s goals with his paintings is to address the title of the show, “Monachopsis: The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place.” Visit eastsideartistsgallery.com for more information.

Walk in the footsteps of doctors, nurses, soldiers and civilians who cared for 8,000 wounded soldiers in Downtown Frederick Every Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 PM from April until October, docents from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine will explain how Frederick became “One Vast Hospital.” Arguably the most trying moment in city’s history came after the Battle of Antietam in the fall of 1862. The town’s population doubled when 8,000 wounded soldiers were delivered by ambulance to make-shift hospitals throughout Frederick. Initially the walking tours will be limited to 12 participants. Masks are required throughout the tour and we request that you practice strict social distancing. Tickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members, but you must still reserve your spot. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. With accounts taken from the diaries and letters of the surgeons, soldiers, and civilians who were there, this guided walking tour will explore the locations of the city’s Civil War hospitals in churches, schools, and public buildings. This program is an excellent way to take in downtown Frederick as many […]

Combining the skill and discipline of an investigative reporter with a comedian’s sense of the absurd and the stupid, political humorist P.J. O’Rourke covers current events like no other. Known as a hard-bitten, cigar-smoking conservative, he in fact bashes all political persuasions. O’Rourke proves himself a savvy guide to national and global affairs. His razor sharp insights never fail to inform and entertain audiences. A separately ticketed meet-and-greet reception will take place immediately following the event. For an additional $75 you can meet the speaker for a photo opportunity, a signing opportunity (whenever possible), and light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. All proceeds from the meet-and-greet reception will benefit children’s programs at Frederick County Public Libraries. Tickets can be purchased by members starting August 8th and by the general public August 15th.

Multi-Grammy award winning blues rocker John Hiatt (“Have a Little Faith in Me,” “Slow Turning”) and acclaimed bluegrass singer-songwriter Jerry Douglas (“Gone to Fortingall”) join forces to perform the greatest hits from their distinguished careers and music from their upcoming release Leftover Feelings. “All the Lilacs in Ohio” is the first video released from John Hiatt with The Jerry Douglas Band’s forthcoming album, Leftover Feelings, available May 21, 2021. This project and video were recorded in Historic RCA Studio B, continuing the studio’s legacy as a “temple of sound,” and creating documentary resources for use by the nonprofit Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum. These educational materials showcase recording methods reminiscent of those practiced in the 1950s and 60s, with Hiatt, Douglas and band members making and recording music in real time by listening to each other and emotionally reacting through their spontaneous performances. frederickpride.org The Frederick Center is postponing its Frederick Pride 2021 celebration, originally scheduled for Sunday, October 3, 2021, to Saturday, June 25, 2022. In consultation with the Frederick County Health Department, The Frederick Center has assessed that the risk to public health is too high to risk holding a large-scale event during a resurgence of the COVID pandemic and, specifically, the more transmissible deadly delta-variant. The Frederick Center will continue operating its peer support programs, including Youth Group Jr., Youth Group, Young Adult Group, Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Group, TransFamilies, TransTeens, TransPartners, Healing Pride, and LGBTQ+ Recovery. Additionally, The Frederick Center is developing some smaller-scale events over the next few months, both outdoors and indoors, allowing folx to gather in a safe environment. The Frederick Center’s Mission: The Frederick Center exists to support and advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people and our families so we thrive, accepted and affirmed, in the broader Frederick community. More details are coming. Check back to frederickpride.org for more information.
