WHIMSY, an installation art exhibition at Gallery 115 at The Y Arts Center in Downtown, Frederick will run Sunday, September 26th through Sunday, January 9th, 2022. Opening Reception: Saturday, November 6th, 7pm-9pm – the first open studios and micro gallery will also be open on First Saturday, and our artist-in-residence program officially launches on October 1st with two artists, Karin Birch and Lisa Sheirer. Whimsy presents the whimsical yet poignant works of Heather Harvey and Shana Kohnstamm, two Maryland based artists. Each artist created a semi-immersive installation in the gallery. Additionally, Harvey will be showing a collection of new paintings in the Foyer Gallery. Harvey utilizes an eclectic range of litter she finds on her walks and transforms it into an intriguing, surprising cascading chandelier of objects. Her work transforms the discarded into treasure while evoking the specter of stranger’s pasts. Kohnstamm’s work utilizes the ancient medium of hand dyed wool, an ecologically sustainable choice to create a variety of colorful biomorphic forms, at once playful, comedic and eerie. Sculptures are placed on unevenly placed platforms protruding from the wall or suspended from the ceiling evoking a theatrical and other-worldly communion. Harvey’s collection of new paintings in the Foyer […]

She shows her works, which are created on-site, in galleries throughout her native Canada and internationally. “Embroidered Spaces” opens to the public Saturday, September 2 and will be on view through October 31. Admission to the Delaplaine’s galleries is free. Delaplaine Hours: Monday-Saturday, 9AM-5PM Sunday, 11AM-5PM McCavour will give a free online artist’s talk on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00 p.m. She will discuss her process and the ideas behind “Embroidered Spaces.” The artist will travel from Canada to Frederick in order to teach her unique embroidery technique in a special workshop at The Delaplaine Arts Center. What started as a side project for the seasoned players soon moved to the front and center and they began to record and release albums in earnest. In 2019, Sideline won the IBMA Song Of The Year Award for their hit single, “Thunder Dan.” To listen to Sideline reminds the fan of why so many people fall in love with Bluegrass in the first place; pulse-pounding drive, songs sung from the heart, perfected timing and dynamics as well as a visceral emotion in the rendering. Ten years in, he is making some of the most compelling music of his career with his newest release “Lost and Found.”

His razor sharp insights never fail to inform and entertain audiences. A separately ticketed meet-and-greet reception will take place immediately following the event. For an additional $75 you can meet the speaker for a photo opportunity, a signing opportunity (whenever possible), and light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Multi-Grammy award winning blues rocker John Hiatt (“Have a Little Faith in Me,” “Slow Turning”) and acclaimed bluegrass singer-songwriter Jerry Douglas (“Gone to Fortingall”) join forces to perform the greatest hits from their distinguished careers and music from their upcoming release Leftover Feelings. “All the Lilacs in Ohio” is the first video released from John Hiatt with The Jerry Douglas Band’s forthcoming album, Leftover Feelings, available May 21, 2021. This project and video were recorded in Historic RCA Studio B, continuing the studio’s legacy as a “temple of sound,” and creating documentary resources for use by the nonprofit Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum. These educational materials showcase recording methods reminiscent of those practiced in the 1950s and 60s, with Hiatt, Douglas and band members making and recording music in real time by listening to each other and emotionally reacting through their spontaneous performances. “1964” focuses on the quintessential moment in history, when The Beatles actually played before a LIVE audience. The Beatles toured the world in the early 1960’s, but now only a precious few remain who actually saw them LIVE. Who actually felt the “mania” that brought them to world acclaim. Today, all that remains are a few scant memories and some captured images in pictures and on poor quality film and video. “1964” meticulously re-creates the “MAGIC” of those LIVE Beatles’ performances with artful precision and unerring accuracy. For those that never saw The Beatles LIVE and always wanted to know what it must have been like…this is as close as anyone could possibly get to…FEELING the MAGIC! For over 30 years, “1964” has thrilled audiences with what is considered to be the most authentic and endearing tribute to The Beatles. This has been accomplished by a steady and consistent cast of talented professional musicians, who painstakingly recreate the look, feel and note for note sound of an actual LIVE Beatles performance.

The Galway, Ireland, and Nashville-based quartet––comprised of two sets of brothers, Enda & Fergal Scahill and Martin & David Howley––continually push musical boundaries while maintaining an unwavering devotion to the essential audience experience. WB3 seamlessly converge the shared and varied traditions of Americana, Bluegrass, and Celtic music with popsensible songcraft to create a truly unique and gratifying signature sound. Brilliantly commanded instruments––banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and percussion––effortlessly elevate lead singer David Howley’s propulsive voice. Live on stage, their songs carry the listener along until, at the perfect moment, the band crescendos into catchy choruses with pitch perfect harmonies. We Banjo 3 deliver their music with such palpable rapport, stunning precision, and infectious energy, it’s impossible to pigeonhole what kind of listener might suddenly consider themselves a WB3 fan.
