From May 7 to August 28, the Frederick Arts Council is hosting an exhibition featuring the work of Frederick artist Lisa Dillin on view at the 5 E. 2nd Street Art Center. The exhibition ‘Sorry we missed you’ features nine sculptures and a sound piece which focus on the complicated aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since March of 2020 the physical and emotional space between each of us has widened like a deep chasm along an active fault line. Once buzzing city centers – many of which were already underutilized and in decline – have gone silent. City buildings and suburban retail centers that had long ago fallen into disrepair eerily await our return. As we travel to our old familiar places we find that vestiges of what was abound. We have left traces of ourselves in every nook and cranny of our towns and cities. These human remnants are not dissimilar to messages in a bottle: they are clues to what came before, a voice waiting to be discovered. Sorry we missed you is an attempt to make tangible the emotional quality of the sustained isolation and economic decline that characterizes this time. Sorry we missed you extends an […]

TAG is pleased to present Rhonda J. Smith’s solo show, Seasons of Grace Smith is a practicing artist and retired art professor who lives near Keedysville, MD. She uses non-toxic inks and a non-traditional approach of mounting her large-scale linoleum prints to archival boards. Says Smith, “Just prior to the COVID outbreak, while in New York City, I encountered a reliquary figure from medieval Europe in a gallery. After I returned home I discovered that this sculpture continued to be part of my thoughts. Out of all the work I saw, it was this medieval sculpture that most intrigued me. Perhaps it was because this object contained something that was meant to empower it and imbue it with significance beyond the sculpture itself. I love the idea that art can empower, protect, or heal.“ The show runs from June 4 through June 27. Smith will be at The Artists Gallery on June 5 for First Saturday and will host a lecture and demonstration of her process on June 17 at 6 p.m. Work by other TAG artists will also be shown. Gallery hours are noon to 8 on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 4 on Sundays. Admission is free.
