The Frederick Arts Council announces a new exhibition featuring the work of DC artist Alyssa Imes on view at FAC’s Art Center at 5 E 2nd St, Frederick, MD 21701. The art installation, “Unstructured Rise,” features a variety of materials including textiles and cast iron that highlight Alyssa’s approach to creating a multi-media experience for her viewers. Imes’ work is about personal connections and social interactions that open new doors and which create a network of emotional relationships. Imes’ focus is to spread awareness of growth after trauma. “Unstructured Rise” serves as a retrospective of Imes’ work as an artist. “Alyssa’s work is both challenging and beautiful and gives a unique expression to a universal process of healing,” said Louise Kennelly, executive director Alyssa Imes grew up in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She received her undergraduate degree from Shepherd University in 2018. She uses mediums of knitted fibers and communal cast iron. She graduated with her MFA from University of Maryland in May 2022. A Community Interactive Art Exhibition The newest art exhibition coming to Gallery 115 at the Y Arts Center in Downtown Frederick will run from May 14 through August 15, 2022. The exhibition concept comes from Frederick-based artist, curator, and writer Rula Jones. Graffiti derives from the Italian word graffiato which means “scratched”. The term “graffiti” is used in art history for works of art produced by scratching a design into a surface and would later evolve to refer to the art genre that means writing or drawings made on a wall or other surface, usually without permission and within public view. “I am so pleased to host this exhibition in our gallery over the summer as it is a uniquely immersive experience that is fundamentally inclusive of all ages and artistic skill levels,” says Anthony Brock, Director of Arts and Humanities. GRAFFIATO invites the Frederick, Maryland community to use chalk to express themselves through text and drawings within an interior gallery space that has been transformed with black chalk paper. Local artists have also been invited to contribute. “I am excited to participate in Graffito at Gallery 115 because, for me, it’s so immediate and spontaneous, yet evolves over time. I am accustomed to work that […]

Join us for a combined art show with Kathryn Phebus and Sonja Mishalanie. Kathryn Phebus paints in acrylics and watercolors and loves applying color and texture to the canvas. The inspiration for her artwork comes from local scenes and landscapes, as well as from photos friends send her in hopes of inspiring a painting. Many have, but the painting really doesn’t start working until the photo is put aside and then the brushes, paint and color enliven the piece as paint is applied to the canvas. Sonja Mishalanie is a local Frederick artist who specializes in acrylics and watercolors and occasionally dabbles in pastel and oil. Her work is inspired by her many travels along with local landscapes, including her hometown in upstate New York and her seaside condo in Lewes, DE. She states, “Preserving wild places has always been a passion of mine. What better way to preserve and cherish something than through art? It is my hope that I can capture even one hint of everyday majesty.” First Saturday 1-7pm, Exhibit runs weekends July 2-31, Gallery Hours 1-5 Sat & Sun
