The Arts Community – Valuable Preparedness Partners
Preparedness for emergencies or disaster is a shared community responsibility. Join this session to learn your role in the all-hazards approach to protecting yourself, your employees, and your valuable assets. This session will lead individuals in the arts community through the basic actions to prevent, protect against, and respond to a disaster or emergency regardless of the type, such as fire, flood, civil disturbance and more. Participants will:
Increase situational awareness of the potential threats facing the arts community.

  • Explore the tools and resources needed to identify the common hazards as a foundation for emergency planning and building a continuity plan.
  • Embrace the all-hazards approach to preparedness for their own arts business.
  • Learn actions to lessen the impact of a future emergency or disaster.
  • Explore the role of the arts community in the Carroll Creek mitigation project.
  • Networking in the preparedness arena

6:30 – 7:30 PM  Crisis Communication Strategies – Having a Plan in Place 
Speaker Mary Ellen Mitchell

Following 20 years working for both national and local 501c3 organizations in the fields of education, health, and housing, Mary Ellen launched Allow Me Consulting in 2018 in order to provide nonprofits and small businesses with capacity building and public relations expertise. She has a strong track record in program and event creation, strategic planning and partnership building. Mary Ellen serves the community through the Frederick Coalition for Financial Success, Leadership Frederick County Council, the Women’s Giving Circle, and as an appointed member of the Frederick County Government’s Affordable Housing Council.

7:30 – 9:00 PM Planning for Long Term Stability
This session will address Insurance Coverage and Tools for individual artists and arts businesses to prepare for everyday activities and emergency responses.

Tools include: dPlan|ArtsReady , an online emergency preparedness and response tool for artists and arts organizations—regardless of size, scope, or discipline—to prevent or mitigate disasters, prepare for the most likely emergencies, respond quickly to minimize damage, and recover effectively while continuing to provide services to your community.

Bring your questions about insurance – coverage, workers comp and advance planning.

Stephen Blair is the President of Lyceum Insurance Services, the largest independent employee benefits broker in Maryland. With a commitment to community and leadership, Stephen sits on the Board of the Frederick County Boys and Girls Club and the Gaithersburg Germantown Chamber of Commerce Foundation. He is also a valued member of the CareFirst BCBS Broker Advisory Council and a participant in the Leadership Maryland Class of 2024. Stephen has a deep passion for supporting the nonprofit sector and is dedicated to elevating women and minority-owned businesses.

Dr. Genna Styles-Lyas is Director of LAA Community Engagement and Equity in Research at Americans for the Arts. She formerly was AEP6 Director, Community Engagement & Equity, liaising between community partners and national consultants; developing and implementing resources that support engagement with the research study across cultural and arts organizations, especially those serving and centering on BIPOC communities; and all other aspects of the survey including the post-study evaluation. For over 12 years, Genna worked as a Teaching Artist for arts organizations nationally. She served as Education & Engagement Program Manager at Everyman Theatre, and was a panelist for the MD State Arts Council, providing arts expertise to evaluate the Teaching Artist Roster applications, Genna also served as Director of Education and Outreach at SPdp (Staycee Pearl dance project) in PA, where she helped develop artistic standards for the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards. Genna earned her Doctorate in Education in Out of School Learning with a focus on Teaching Artists in marginalized communities from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, with a concentration on arts education, from Northcentral University.

Beth Flowers, Executive Director, AIR Collaborative, has more than 25 years of executive level experience with non-profits, governmental agencies, broadcast media, and the arts. She is a visionary thinker and a talented communicator. Beth has created messaging and strategies for victorious political candidates and issues, inspired citizen participation in government, managed public planning efforts, repositioned struggling organizations, and developed innovative programming that connects people. Beth is a national leader in the fields of arts professional development, community development, and entrepreneurship. As the creator and Executive Director of the Air Collaborative, she is at the forefront of connecting artists and creatives to their communities in new ways that truly raise the value of art and creativity.
