Cross-quarter days are the points in Earth’s orbit that are halfway between the solstices and equinoxes. These points are historically significant because they mark key seasonal transitions and are celebrated in many cultures with festivals like Groundhog Day, May Day, Lammas, and Halloween, which have ancient Celtic origins. According to the ancient Celts, a cross-quarter day marks the beginning – not the middle – of a season. October 31, the date for Halloween, marks the approximate midway point between the September autumnal equinox and the December winter solstice. So Halloween is an astronomy holiday, and one of the year’s four cross-quarter days.
