MAD Dance presents “Intentional Terrarium,” a Festival of Performances and Experiences in an Immersive Art Installation

Frederick, MD – MAD Dance presents “Intentional Terrarium” a monthlong festival of performances and experiences taking place in an immersive art installation at the MAD Studio, Y Arts Center, 115 East Church Street, Frederick, MD. Every Saturday in April, from 1:30-8:30 pm, the “Intentional Terrarium” installation will be open to the public, with a rotating series of performances and experiences by a diverse group of artists, performers, healers, and thinkers. Admission is free.
“Intentional Terrarium” features a portable greenhouse as its central feature, complemented by photographs, videos, poems, plants, sticks, vintage clothing, macrame and embroidered wall hangings, sounds, scents, tastes, recipes, and a collection of blue Ball jars. Driving the project are thoughts about building sanctuaries, bunkers, biospheres, and nurseries, preparing for the end times, thinking about how to share space intimately, self-sufficiency, and carving out time and space for contemplation. The installation encourages the question: What is so precious that we would create a structure to nurture its existence?
MAD Dance, co-directed by Kitty Clark and Ray C. Shaw, will perform “Precious” every Saturday evening in April at 7:30 pm, as well as a short excerpt from the work every Saturday afternoon in April. Throughout the month they are joined by Lindy Burns, yoga therapist and acupuncturist who will provide sound baths for attendees; James Connors, visual and performance artist, performing “The Molting;” Laura First, storyteller, telling “Sedna, Breathing the soul to awakening;” Elizabeth Kennedy, dancer, and Yvette Martin, musician, performing “Beautiful Human;” Kinetics Dance Company performing “Recollect;” Cam Millar, trombonist, performing “Conversations with Plants;” Neha Misra, poet, visual artist, and climate justice advocate, sharing her poetry; Jodi Obeid, dancer, performing a new piece inspired by raising frogs in a terrarium; Revolution Modern Dance, led by Amanda Comi, performing “Seedling. Sapling. Snag;” and Lisa Sheirer, visual artist, sharing “Watershed Lacuna.” Performances are in 30-minute blocks from 2 pm to 5 pm, and from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. Each artist performs more than once to allow audiences to cycle through the installation and make room for more people to enter. About MAD Dance
MAD Dance is Kitty Clark and Ray C. Shaw, longtime colleagues who make contemporary work in the modern dance tradition. Drawing on improvisational and somatic practices, the duo manifests deeply intimate work. Kitty and Ray focus on nuance and sensitivity, providing an alternative to mainstream movement forms with a modern/post-modern aesthetic that is different, sometimes raw, often beautiful, and always authentic. Intentional Terrarium is MAD’s seventh project since their inception in 2018. They have been honored with an Independent Artist Award and several Creativity Grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, funding from the Frederick Arts Council, and donations from private individuals. Ray has an MFA in dance from Arizona State University and is a practicing acupuncturist. Kitty has an MFA in dance from Smith College and is an active arts administrator. Together, they thrive in collaboration and love the unexpected happenings that transpire when creative minds play together.
